| Services provided by the HES-SO
The provision of services is one of the missions of the HES-SO. In a university context, the term “Provision of services” comprises all those activities, the main objective of which is to apply and/or to transfer knowledge or skills.
The provision of a service is in response to an external institutional request or a public tender, specific and time-limited. In principle, it is paid for by the client, for whom it should bring results which are transferable to its practice. Services are provided for companies, local authorities or cultural, social or health institutions.
Services are offered in each of the 6 fields of study in the HES-SO. The HES-SO supports the development of the service provision policies of the colleges, helping them to raise their profiles.
It coordinates information on the services provided and on the skills available at the colleges. The HES-SO recognises competition from services of equal quality provided by the private sector.
Types of services provided
The types of services provided by the HES-SO vary widely. However, they may be divided into three main kinds of activity: services, advice/consultancy, teaching/training.
- Service activities include hotel and hospitality services; organising events; provision or hire of laboratory equipment, etc.
- Advice and consultancy activities include studies and analyses, measuring standards, expert reports.
- Training activities include further professional training and continuing education (excluding postgraduate courses or studies).
Conditions attached to the provision of services
The provision of services is the subject of a contract between the institution, the member of teaching staff and the client, who determine the terms of implementation and financing of the service. In line with the “Master plan for the Universities of Applied Sciences”, these services are self-financing. The clients vary considerably, and include institutions or public departments, companies, other universities, other departments or colleges of the HES-SO, etc.
