The conditions of admission for HES-SO bachelor degree courses vary according to the course and the origin of the diplomas or degrees (Swiss or foreign).
The general conditions below are given by field of study. It is always advisable to check for each degree course whether specific conditions exist.
Holders of foreign secondary study certificates, whether in respect of general or professional education, that are recognised as equivalent, may be admitted under the same conditions as the holders of Swiss qualifications, subject to them possessing sufficient language skills to be able to follow the course.
Admission for holders of qualifications obtained in Switzerland
General conditions valid for the academic start 2010, next update October 2010
- Holders of an upper secondary certificate in professional education (maturité professionnelle) with a CFC (Federal Certificate of Competence) corresponding to the chosen degree course.
- Holders of an upper secondary certificate in professional education (maturité professionnelle) with a CFC which does not correspond to the chosen degree course, with one extra year of practical professional experience in the chosen field.
- Holders of an upper secondary certificate of general education (federal certificate or certificate recognised by the Swiss Confederation) with at least one extra year of work experience.
- Holders of an upper secondary level diploma (Swiss École de Culture Générale level in 3 years) with a CFC corresponding to the chosen degree course.
- Subject to the availability of places, holders of a CFC may sit an examination no sooner than three years after obtaining it, provided they have completed a minimum of one year’s subsequent professional experience.
- Design and Visual Arts schools also arrange for an aptitude test to be taken.
Health – Social Work
- Holders of a CFC (Federal Certificate of Competence) in a profession related to the intended field of study + upper secondary certificate in professional education (maturité professionnelle) in health/social work.
- The holders of a Swiss École de Culture Générale certificate in the option corresponding to the intended field of study + specialised professional diploma in the same option.
- Candidates with qualifications not corresponding to the above requirements (e.g. holders of a high school leaving certificate [maturité gymnasiale] recognised by the Swiss Confederation) may be admitted subject to successful completion and attestation of a preparatory year (in the field of Health) or professional experience at an attested quality level (in the field of Social work). It is advisable to check the details of these requirements for each degree course.

Recognition of education between the universities of Western Switzerland
In Western Switzerland there is a memorandum of agreement relating to the reciprocal recognition of studies and qualifications and to a framework of regulations on student access and qualification transfer between universities. This memorandum of agreement concerns all the universities of Western Switzerland: the Universities of Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel, the EPFL and the HES-SO.
Admission for holders of qualifications from colleges
The admission to bachelor’s degree courses of holders of qualifications from technical colleges is the subject of recommendations by the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences. Admission for holders of foreign qualifications
In the case of foreign qualifications, the basic condition underlying all admissions for UAS courses at Bachelor’s level is the ability to prove at least one year’s professional experience in the field relevant to the chosen degree course, or to have undertaken an attested preparatory year.
With regard to secondary level qualifications in general education, equivalent to a Swiss upper secondary school certificate (maturité gymnasiale), candidates may refer for information to the guidelines from the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities.
The University of Applied Sciences is the competent authority for determining the equivalence of foreign and Swiss qualifications
The admission to courses at Universities of Applied Sciences and the recognition of foreign qualifications is the subject of recommendations by the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences.
The holders of foreign qualifications should contact the relevant educational establishment direct to request official recognition of their qualifications.
