In line with their mandate, the Universities of Applied Sciences provide courses focused on the practical, leading to qualification by diploma and preparing students for the exercise of professional activities which require the application of knowledge and scientific methods and, depending on the field, of creative and artistic abilities.
The University of Applied Sciences diploma
The UAS diploma is a university level qualification awarded on completion of at least three years of study. It is recognised by the Swiss Confederation, legally protected and accepted throughout Europe.
The UAS Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees awarded by the HES-SO comply with the principles of the Bologna Declaration and the legal basis of implementation in the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences.
Bachelor’s Degree
According to the principles of the Bologna Declaration, the Bachelor’s Degree corresponds to the diploma awarded on completion of the first cycle of higher education study.
In order to obtain this diploma at the HES-SO, students must register for one of the courses offered by the HES-SO and obtain at least 180 ECTS credits. This corresponds to three years of full-time study.
In the Universities of Applied Sciences, all the courses offer an education enabling students to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree, providing the basis for a professional qualification. Master’s degree
According to the principles of the Bologna Declaration, the Master’s corresponds to the diploma awarded on completion of the second cycle of higher education study. In order to obtain this qualification, students must register for a Master’s course and obtain 90 or 120 ECTS credits, depending on the field of study. This corresponds to one and a half years or two years of full-time study.
